3rd Annual Full Moon Drum, Dance, Trance Festival with Master Drummer Madou Dembele Sept 20-22, 2002 in Sawyer, MI Presented by The Mudd Co & Holy Goat PercussionYour Hosts ~ Elizabeth Nuti and Taylor The
djembe drum is a goblet-shaped drum from
West Africa which is sometimes referred to as "The Healing Drum". Traditionally, it is played to call spirits, at religious and secular ceremonies, to prepare warriors for battle or, in the right hands, to
heal the sick. There will be three levels of djembe instruction offered - beginner, intermediate and advanced. It is strongly recommended that more advanced students take all levels - you will always be surprised and
pleased that you did. Djembe classes will also include instruction in the low, melodic dounun drums. The
djembe and dounun are traditionally played with dancers. The dance and the drums together serve to tell the story of
the particular rhythm. Besides being a superior form of exercise, dance is a great way for drummers to develop a more internal sense of timing, while expressing ones self in a healthy way, connecting mind, body and
spirit. Yoga is an ancient African/Indian art form. Literally translated, 'Yoga' means 'union' - with spirit, the self, with higher powers, etc. Postures (asanas) penetrate deeply through all tissues of the body,
massaging internal organs and ridding the body of toxins while developing core strength. Breath-work helps train the mind and meditation helps to integrate the vital forces. The art and science of yoga is comprised of a
wide variety of practices that refine awareness and enhance physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Starting each morning with these exercises will invigorate your body, clarify your mind, and nurture
your spirit. Pulse Connection© Workshop (formerly named "Trance Session"): Western culture with its emphasis on rationality and logic has been very quick to dismiss other states of consciousness into
the realm of pathology. Ancient and pre-industrial cultures on the other hand valued them as powerful means for connecting with sacred realities, nature, and each other, and they used these states for identifying
diseases and healing. Using deep breathing exercises accompanied by rhythmic drumming, this workshop will give you the opportunity to experience higher levels of consciousness and thus to travel into a world that exists
in the deepest recesses of the mind. Madou Dembele's grandfather was a Master Drummer. Dembele began playing the
djembe as a young child. He believes that his grandfather's spirit guided him as he learned music. Even
when he was very young, people recognized his special talent. As Dembele grew, he studied with experienced drum masters. These masters are highly respected spiritual leaders in the community. He paid close attention to
their wisdom and knowledge of traditions. Dembele says "To really play well, you must be close to the old people and respect them, and they will give you the power to play." Born in Mali and growing up in Côte
d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast), Dembele carries on the traditions of his teachers and the oldest cultures from which the
djembe emanates. This particular style of djembe drumming is hard to come by in this country and is very
challenging and unique. Aaron Wheeler, your yoga instructor, began practicing hatha yoga 10 years ago, and has been teaching since 1997. He's completed two teacher training programs in Chicago, Il. He currently
teaches classes at several locations throughout the Chicagoland area. Idy Ciss, your dance instructor, is from Senegal, West Africa and has been dancing since the age of 5. He credits his grandparents for his natural
ability to dance; they were well known in their village for their dancing and it was from them that he received this gift. A former member of Les Ballets Kolam
Sererer and Ballets Africains Silimbo, Idy is now the
assistant to the Artistic Director of Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago, offering his expertise as a consultant, choreographer and principal dancer. Your Host's Companies: |
