About Madou Dembele:

"an energetic Master Drummer" Babatunde Olatunji

"...wonderful and exhilarating" The Guggenheim

Madou Dembele’s grandfather was a Master Drummer. Dembele began playing the djembe as a young child. He believes that his grandfather’s spirit guided him as he learned music. Even when he was very young, people recognized his special talent.

As Dembele grew, he studied with experienced drum masters. These masters are highly respected spiritual leaders in the community. He paid close attention to their wisdom and knowledge of traditions. Dembele says “To really play well, you must be close to the old people and respect them, and they will give you the power to play.”

Born in Mali and growing up in Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast), Dembele carries on the traditions of his teachers and the oldest cultures from which the djembe emanates. This particular style of djembe drumming is hard to come by in this country and is very challenging and unique.
